By Mildred M. Elliot

Learning to age gracefully is as easy as having a healthy attitude and adopting healthy habits to keep your body and mind active. Use these elements to make your old years into golden years.

Do not worry about the number of your age. You can easily be distracted by numbers such as your weight, age and height. This is why you have a doctor, so let him worry about this information while you focus on having more fun in your life.

Get enough sleep every night. Depending on your own body, most people need between seven and nine hours of quality sleep each day. Lack of sleep can put people at risk for diseases, such as heart-related conditions and depression.

You can improve your skin as you age by staying away from makeup products like foundation or powder makeup. This is particularly true for older individuals because their skin requires additional hydration. Try enhancing your looks with other types of make-up, like eyeliner and mascara.

Slowly cut off contact with people in your life who exude negativity. Keep the friends who are full of life and a positive outlook on life. Research indicates that smiling and laughing results in fewer wrinkles thus keeping you looking younger. Hang out with friends that you will have a good time with, not those who are downers.

Sugar is one of the biggest factors in having a shorter life. Excess sugar can shorten lives and accelerate the aging process. Every animal has its lifespan significantly lowered by sugar.

Don't forget to drink enough water. As you grow older it is important to stay hydrated and drink lots of water; 8-10 glasses daily.

Get regular checkups that involve testing blood pressure. High blood pressure can cause fatal problems without even showing a single symptom. As you age, your cardiovascular system will unfortunately start to deteriorate, and closely monitoring your blood pressure becomes even more important. If you have an issue, you can get to the bottom of it as soon as you can.

One way to help prevent heart disease is to eat more fish. The cholesterol in red meat can clog your arteries. Fish is full of healthy fats which are believed to slow down the clogging and help you to live a long, healthy life.

The advice in this article is excellent. It can help us to handle problems we face as we age, but it can also help us avoid those problems in the first place.
